Random flashes # 361 - 367

Actually a bunch of odds and ends

This has been bugging me for awhile, it means something but it's hard to put a handle on it.

People shape the world. Most animals do in some way, like ants & termites, herbivore overgrazing or any animal that overexploits its' resources, but I'm not talking about that as much as functionally useless changes to impress other humans. We can call it "useful" but there are other forms of the same solution that can be easier to make and maintain.

Once these changes are made, they can develop other uses so they become indispensable to someone grown used to them. Like what on earth would we ever do w/o cell phones and chat-gbt?

Ants, bees and reef fish do it to a certain extent based on social nuances of smell and color. But the point is there's a pattern in our physiology that needs to express for hormonal reasons.

Things fall apart.

I'm a handyman in a small town on the N.calif coast. I have maybe 3 to 5 accounts going at any time except during winter. Sun and salt air is job insurance because they slowly dissolve wood and metal so everything needs to be replaced periodically. Termites help too. Occasionally I get philosophical about it because people give me nasty broken stuff to fix because it's cheaper than buying new stuff (nearest town is 30 mi away and gas is expensive):

Basically, there are limited atoms in the universe and they're exchanging electrons and forming new molecules which recombine in other forms, like rust and rocks. Things that appropriate the disintegration process are called "life"; that's us. We put things together to maintain our physical integrity: Bodies, houses, devices, territory. It all seems pretty natural, we've always done it. Fish do it, insects, etc. Our brains create rituals : spiders maintain their webs, pheromones attract reproductive partners. When I patch ratholes in Barbaras henhouse to protect the eggs, I'm competing with the rats for resources (by proxy, because Barbara pays me to do it. I like chickens and I like rats too but they don't pay me). I'm a mercenary.

Cultures.

People tend to associate with groups they understand and probably grew up with. They/we tend to agree on appropriate behavior whether it's Zen Wall Staring or Nazi salutes, it insulates us from things our group says are threatening, and it's our basic definition.

Rituals

Rituals are formalized teaching. They need to be taught in the form they were originally experienced. Hijinks may ensue if forms are crossed. Writing is a ritual that manifests memes. If the memes are forgotten, the message is too. An example of crossing forms would be singing the ABCs like kids do in kindergarten. Other ritual forms are music, dance, construction, art, philosophy, war, statecraft. There are probably others and even more in other languages. It's where cultural knowledge is expressed.

Some ritual no longer describes its founding meme and survives by being associated with something else, for example almost anything in the church. Its supporting meme isn't in the ritual but in the community that performs the ritual. It brings them together. Thats a good thing I think, because it homogenizes society. President Trump would love to call on religious believers but he can't pull off the morality issue. If he could, it would solve a lot of his other problems.

Thought processes

When a thought begins it has no context, we add that. It's an empty impulse, possibly the same one that regulates flow of cerebral fluid. Sort of like a heartbeat or it may even be stimulated by a heartbeat.

When awake, that function keeps us aware of our environment. When asleep, it causes lucid dreaming. Its rhythmical pulsing probably comes from the cerebellum or some more basic/primitive sections. (I don't know what they're called) it's a biological equivalent of the hertz rate of a computers CPU.

The thought content is determined by mood.

The mood is a random construction made of memories, and whatever body process have worked there way to awareness. Some form of stress, or relief even tiny.

The memories stimulate hormones that tell you if you're happy, sad or angry. The pathway seems to run through the amygdala because that's its basic function (according to literature).

The thought is then filled in with something to justify the hormone. Like HOW to get food, establish dominance, run away, rest break, whatever; by the "Grey matter". Any physical action has already begun: You're slammed shut in your car before you think verbally: "Wow a Grizzly! Where's the cell phone?"

Trumps new plan to get someone to read his posts

Heather Cox Richardson Facebook

I can't imagine what drives that man. He's a self fulfilling disaster. Maybe that's the point: he gets off on humiliation. It would explain both Epstine and Melania. The upside is (if that's the right term) he wants to perform for his handelers but doesn't actually care if he looses, the high is the same.

1000 evangelical ministers arrive at Trumps "Great American State Fair" to convert a crowd numbering in the low 100s (youtube).

Buddha says there is no self. smiley

A month or 2 ago I went through a spate of depression, beating myself up through my internal dialog especially when trying to go to sleep. Sometimes several times a night. Eventually I got mad at myself because I couldn't differentiate myself from the abuser, and it kept popping up whenever I tried to relax. When I posed the question : "Who's in charge here?" and got only argument, in frustration I said Just stop! "Everybody be good!" and there was silence. Because "everybody" includes this thing I refer to as myself. It all stopped. I'd stepped outside of my "self" on the authority of an ideal state of being, and at the same time acknowledging that any opinion on anything is not my own. There's actually nobody here, the first person is a reflection. I've used that trick a lot since then and (so far) it works every time. I'm still dealing with my inner dialog but it's much less of a bother and no argument. The hard part is remembering to do it before I get worked up. Hormones & road rage are a giveaway.

I suspect that by this definition, AI could pass as conscious because it pulls garbage out of popular memes and calls it reason. That's what I was doing to myself but using my own memory for source data. A really good reason to limit AI is so people don't confuse their identity with it. We could, for example, make it identify itself as such in print and all AI images must have high contrast people with 6 fingers or little wings, stuff like that. Cosplay people would be all over it.

The thing about discovering there's no one home here sort of explains how Monks and Marines can go headfirst into the void with no qualms (ok maybe a few but those are unfounded: "!Yes Sir, Master Sargent Sir!!"). There's just no decision, no individual ant on the hill decides for themselves. They do it for their kids, the Ancestors, Father-in-heaven, The Führer, Buddha, or the next officer up in the chain of command, I think I do it for my Mom, so I guess it's ancestors for me.

Ok, one might ask, "Who's at the top of the chain of command?" Maybe not Mom but she got me through childhood alive so that's some good planning. But nobody actually claims to BE the final decider except Napoleon, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Bush2 and Trump (may he live foreve.. uh .. ok maybe not). Sometimes selfish and conceited people in an echo chamber will believe their own hype. If they can cancel your job on a whim then ones survival strategy might be to go along w/ their stupid fantasy till an opportunity presents itself to bump them off first (but like with a smooth transition of government).

Ancestor advice & ESP
There are guessing games, such as Stick Game also called Lahal (YouTube), played between Indian communities that pretty much rely on ESP. People who are good at those games are sometimes good at guessing other things and there's a process for it. It works like this: when times are hard, ask your ancestors, tell them it would be good to know where the herds are, or how to deal with some problem like droughts or pushy neighbors. (maybe through Stick Game at someones funeral because: Ancestors) The whole community benefits from developing those skills and identifying individuals who are good at it. After awhile, it and it's cultural framework, becomes an evolutionary trait selected by survivors. ESP testing at Canadas Indian schools(1) found the odds against chance for correct guesses were 700 to one among some of the students. It's curious that nothing was ever done with the result of the tests by either the Canadian government or by the University that conducted them because (IMHO) the testers justified their actions and existence through a different religion that considers "magic" a black art so they rejected the skill and instead killed thousands (yes) of Indian kids through discipline, starvation and neglect, then forgot to tell Jesus. :(

Sorry to end on that, just follow your heart.

:)

1. “It may be said that at least one group of American Indian children have given scores in ESP card tests that are ascribable only to the ability known as extra-sensory perception,” wrote the study’s author A.A. Foster, who at that time was associated with the Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University

chat AI says:

  • "Conduct of the Experiment:
The tests were conducted on children aged 6 to 20 years during the winter of 1940-1941.

Students were asked to guess the content of cards held behind a screen by a researcher, essentially attempting to perceive information without direct interaction.

  • Results:
The study claimed that some students had scores attributed solely to ESP, but the overall findings were viewed as inconclusive, with children's performances matching random chance.
The study highlighted that there was no significant or consistent evidence to strongly support the existence of ESP among the tested children.

A Holistic Universe: Flash # 1101.f.

Full moon
Free will exists in a deterministic universe because intent/observation functions as a measuring device (for example to intend something is to visualize its present state and compare it with an idealized state, the process of comparing essentially performs a measurement.), which collapses the Standing wave to form the most likely probability which includes the measuremnt.

The process of a "measurement" collapsing a wave form may be incompletely described. Semantically, it may not be the measurement that causes the collapse but what the measurement represents, which, to put it another way, converts an idea to kinetic energy and vice versa. The thought itself may have kinetic energy or it may require neurons and muscles-tendons to move physical things around, which pushes the cosmos to rearrange the standing wave to manifest a different outcome than the universe without the movement. As far as I know, Dirk Gently never said this but he'd probably approve.

There's no reason why a wave form has to just manifest through a couple of slits. It could just as well be a standing wave vibrating through the entire 3 (or more)D universe constantly everywhere and it'll continue to do so till something physical reconfigures it, like a slit or photon detector for an attosecond till it finds a new equilibrium. The quantum field might be the way atoms arrange themselves in a completely interconnected universe. Whenever something moves, the rest of the universe adjusts to accommodate.

I don't think I'm done with this, but time will tell.
